The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has introduced legislation that would effectively ban the distribution of Yellow Pages directories in the City of San Francisco. If passed, San Francisco residents would essentially be forced to “opt-in” to continue receiving printed directories. The Board may vote on this proposed ordinance as early as Monday, March 14, 2011.
Without a government mandate, the Yellow Pages Association has already made it easy and convenient for consumers to have the choice and flexibility they want and need when it comes to delivery of the directories. They have introduced a solution that helps consumers manage the delivery of phone books-and it is working.
The San Francisco proposed legislation is flawed and poses a threat to small businesses in San Francisco. The proposed ordinance potentially cuts off an important source of information for all those who do not readily have access to the Internet.
